Paneda rolling out its new container-based platform for major broadcasters

Linköping, Sweden 2024-10-14

Paneda is now rolling out its new platform based on docker container. The new platform is based on the well proven and robust Paneda multiplexer core, which has now been redesigned for containerization.

A container-based solution offers several advantages, just to mention a few:
▪Unmatched resource utilization. Spare capacity is shared between all instances making the total spare capacity smaller. It also comes without the overhead of the virtual execution environment and scheduling.

▪Native scheduling performance. With time sensitive applications, such a DAB headend system, it is not only important that enough resources exist on average. The resources must exist within the tolerance level. Using containers, the threads are directly scheduled by the OS scheduler. When comparing this to the two-level scheduling (first the VM must be scheduled and then the thread in the VM can be scheduled by the OS) in a virtualized system the advantages become clear. The processing jitter is reduced and provide better timing of the complete system.

▪Easy maintenance and upgrades. With the containerized application it is as easy to upgrade one headend system as it is to upgrade ten at the same time. The same for generating and restoring backups

▪Minimalistic OS. Paneda used Fedora Core OS. An operating system designed specifically for running containers. It is small, secure, and yet flexible. It supports scripted installation using so-called butane configurations that enable re-deployment in minutes.

The new platform is now in live operation with several of our largest customers, and several systems per week are now rolled out worldwide for all our customers, currently over 200.

Examples of new features:
▪Completely new API, based on Open API v3, enables easy interaction with external systems, both for monitoring and control.

▪Station logo SPI, where you can now insert images directly into the web interface, no need for external systems

▪Support for Arabic and Asian languages according to the latest DAB standard for service labels ensemble names.

▪Timing of metadata, new unique functions implemented that make it easier to control synchronization of text or image compared to the audio being played.

Lars-Peder Lundgren, CEO at Paneda Sweden says:

““Paneda has spent over 15 man-years to development and re-engineering the platform to a container-based solution, which put Paneda in the leading position for the future, the new platform with its new API is already adopted by major playout systems for metadata and by others for monitoring features. The new API which is well documented and is already appreciated for its easy-to-integrate approach”
